First off, thanks for the fantastic response to my craft studio reveal!
It is always nice to share my spaces with you!
Second off, I am hosting my first "Craft Night" in November for a few of my friends . . . looking forward to showing you what we come up and hopefully, I will inspire you to start your own craft night.
On to the work table! I know that many of you have probably seen the "door and shelves into desk" idea many of times (Martha has a pretty good example). Well, that is what I worked off of, but just doubled it!
Materials:
2 hollow core doors (mine were from Home Depot for $25 each)
4 shelving units (mine were from WalMart for $16 each)
Primer and paint of your choice
Polyacrylic
4 large L-brackets and matching screws
Tutorial:
Set out your hollow core doors in well ventilated area. Wipe them down to remove dust and dirt, then prime them on one side and on the edges. Once primer is dry, apply three coats of a water based enamel allowing drying time between each coat. I applied mine using a large roller.
Once the paint is dry, apply three coats of a polyacrylic sealer . . . mine was satin finish. I did this additional step to ensure the endurance of the work table finish.
While you are waiting during all of these separate drying times, construct your shelves according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Place your shelving in the general area that you want to locate your table. Two shelves on opposite sides works well and created a stable base. Place dry hollow core doors on top of the shelves. adjust shelves and doors until everything lines up correctly.
Attach an L-bracket to the back of each shelf and then secure to the hollow core door directly above. I actually opted not to do this step . . . this is a large table, but I do projects even larger than this some times. This way, I can easily deconstruct this table and move it to the side for large projects.
Enjoy!
Check out all of that storage underneath the table . . . LOVE IT for all of my awkward pieces.
A little tip: I needed power in the middle of the room, I ran an extension cord and box to the middle of the room and in between the shelves. To prevent accidents, I put down a floor cord protector. You can purchase these from Home Depot for about $20.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. This was a great cost-effective solution for my space . . . big bang for my buck!

That is so smart! Thanks for explaining exactly how you did it.
I am definitely gonna try something like this for my studio, TFS. Now that we have levelled the floor by laying new concrete, i have to come up with an idea for the FUGLY door, that big ass garage door is just not gonna do, so i cant wait to see what door you put on yours, pls hurry and share as my hubby wants it done in the next two weeks.

What a great idea for a craft room!
So many great ideas, that I posted a link in my blog. Thanks!
Thanks so much for sharing, LOVE everything, you have inspired my new room...but that won't be for a few years, when my kids move out..lol..already planning to take over their rec room!
Thanks so much for this!!!!! Can you tell me the measurements on the table? I'm trying to decide if I am going to do this for my new craft space.
Thanks again!
I'm loving this craft table!!! Great job!
Wonderful and so inspiring! Your table is ingenious! I'd love to have a crafting room like yours one day.
Thanks for sharing such a wonderful idea! I am making a version this weekend. :)
I bought the book shelves I am using today and will start building tomorrow! I love your craft area, it has inspired me to create an area in my house for myself! Thanks for the inspiration. Question: Do you have a vent for your kiln? Or is it even needed?
Stephanie
I got the bookshelves but I know after adding the door on top it will be at least 33 inches tall. Is that height uncomfortable to work at in a normal chair?
This is a great idea!! I went today and got the bookcases at Walmart and a door at Lowe's...the whole project only cost me about $50! I just made one table and put it in my basement so my kids could build their Legos on it and for extra storage! Thanks for the idea!
In reading your 'how to' and seeing you chose not to use the L brackets, I was thinking you could mount industrial strength hook & loop tape to the top of the bookcases and the bottom of the door. That would keep it very stabilized, yet allow you to take apart and move as needed.
This is a great worktable solution. Thanks for sharing it!
Definitely doing this. The tut came along right as I was cleaning out the front bedroom to make it into a craft room. It'll be perfect.
So strange, I could have sworn I left a comment on this post about this table! I remember even talking to you via email about it. Weird. Anyway, I told you that I would definitely get around to creating my own, and I did! I gave you a shout out about it. Thanks so much for the inspiration and instructions! http://craftsbyamanda.com/2012/01/diy-craft-table-with-magnetic-chalkboard.html
hi love your studio, i have 4 craft cabinets that i am going to make into the table like you did....can you just tell me the size of your craft room. my living room in my new place is going to be my studio...and i like the layout that you have. and would love to get mine to look like that.
Hi, Love how you have done your craft room and thanks for sharing so many great ideas with us! Was wondering if you ever got your french doors put in? If so, would love to see pictures of how it turned out.
I am getting ready to start my craft room, and can't wait to get it finished~ thanks for the inspiration!
Can you please give a link to the shelving unit, you used ? Thanks
Can you please explain how you applied the polyacrylic? I just finished the 1st coat and it looks horrid (streaks, brush strokes, etc). Does it get better with multiple coats? I've done tons of painting but no clear coats like this. Thanks!
Hi there.
Your craft table was exactly what I was looking for. I was able to gather all the components and put it together in under two hours. I am in heaven. Thank you!
That's one huge table. I wish I had that much room, but I think I can fit just one of those in. I like the versatility of it. My craft room is my next big project. We are making room for it in the basement now. Thanks for sharing. I am now following you via the new Linky follower tool.
I saw this table on Pinterest...my husband and I have been looking to build an island for my kitchen and this is perfect! half is my kitchen side and the other half is for my crafting...I LOVE IT!
Found this on pinterest and had to re-pin it's such a great idea. I am going to add an office to my home and this is a great idea and money saver. Thanks for sharing it!
I love this idea. I think we are going to do this next week. What a great way to organize things and love the hallow desk with organization.
